過=pass 了 personally I think this word is just a work used to end of a sentence, generally it doesn't mean anything however, some Mandarin teachers believe this is a word used in Mandarin to talked about something happened already so when you said 過了 it could mean (the time or event ot object) has passed. when you use 過 solo, it more like use it as meaning 'across' personally opinion
